The official Nicaraguan currency is the Córdoba and usually the Córdoba exchange rate is around C$20= U.S.$1.00. The U.S. dollar is also widely accepted. These are the only generally accepted currencies. (We also accept Canadian Dollars and Euros.)
We suggest that for when you arrive in Managua, you have about U.S.$100.00 in small denomination bills. There is a U.S.$5.00 per person entry fee, and you may require a taxi into Managua to a hotel or mercado/bus terminal. Currency exchanging and ATM use at the airport is not recommended.
Credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard are accepted in some hotels and restaurants (including ours) and for car rentals.
All branches of Bancentro, BanPro and BAC advance cash on major credit cards, but be prepared for long lineups.
The ATM machines at all branches of BAC and at most Texaco stations accept foreign-issued Debit cards (with 4-digit PIN's). Travellers Cheques are definitely not recommended.
The moneychangers (coyotes) near the Central Park in León are friendly and honest, but still BE CAUTIOUS.
There are no banks or ATM's in Las Peñitas.
